While touring Pennsylvania, one of the attractions people seem to over look is visiting one of the hundreds of wineries. These wineries spread throughout the state making Pennsylvania the 7th highest state in wine production. Drive to Altoona, PA for one of the state's best wineries, the Oak Spring Winery.
Founded in 1987, Oak Spring Winery is the home of several award winning vintages. Among the red wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Harvest Red and Concord. Rose wines include Pink Catawba, Holiday Spiced Concord Blush and another gold medal winner — the Steuben. The plethoras of white varieties include Pinot Gris, Vidal Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Niagara and a Reisling, which has been awarded a gold medal by the American Wine Society and the Pennsylvania Wine Association.
While taking a tour of the winery guests will learn about the nearly 6,500 cases of wine this facility produces every year. You will be given a behind-the-scenes look at Oak Spring Winery's tank and bottling room. You will also be given the chance to try various wine samples in the wine tasting room. Wines that delight your palate can then be purchased in the Oak Spring Wine Shop.
Another fun aspect of this winery is for those who enjoy making their own wine, or would like to learn. They offer a Home Brew Shoppe where you can buy everything from wine base ingredients, corks and bottles to labels, thermometers and wine racks. The gift shop also sells a variety of gift baskets and can even make you custom labeled wine bottles for special occasions such as weddings, holidays and corporate events.
Oak Spring Winery is located about 4 miles north of Altoona. From I-99, take the Pinecroft exit and follow the signs for about a mile to the winery. It is open 7 days a week from 11:00a.m.-6:00p.m. (closed on major holidays), and even has a hospitality room for private events.
